More than ever, space has been synonym of freedom this past year. After all, lockdown after lockdown, all that we took for granted, the fresh air, the freedom of wandering freely, the exploration & travel, has been taken from us.

I’ve managed to travel around all these past months and more than ever realized the importance of space. Having space. Finding space. Creating space.

Here is my story of rediscovering space, wild space that felt home from the beginning, turned into a community in the small town of Taghazout, Morocco.

Escaping

Feeling that need. That very need of taking some space, distance ourselves from our daily lives. Escape the noise and routine. Who we are. Get lost. Go out of the city to find our true inner self. Reconnect. Deep down. Shut down the noise. Find peace. A quiet place.

Feeling like being trapped in what was once a reassuring, familiar place. Running in circles. Running around. Finding the same patterns. Having to stick to a place, its habits, a routine, the people.

Wanting so desperately to espace. Heart pouding, ready to explode every single question asked by the authorities. Screaming for an opening, an escape.

It’s the unknown. It’s the excitement. Requiring bravery, strength, endurance, openness, strong will, fierceness, cautiousness.

Exploring

Finding space again after so long. Back into nature. A new playground. Limitless ocean borders. Source of freedom. Virgin to explore. Free of our movements, finally. Having enough space. Be able to breathe again.

Free to write a new story. Free to create a new life. Free to engage again with people without any boundaries. Coming as one again. Not an addition of individuals hiding behind masks and barrier gestures.

Feel the breeze, the fresh air. The endless possibilities. The wildness. The rawness of nature. The storm approaching. The salty water. The contrasted colors.

The peacefulness of eternity. The soothing of wide lands. Nature at its purest. Simplest form. The sound of silence. Shared with wildlife.

Horizon brings a sense of peace.
So does getting high. To the top.
Taking a step back.
Sunsets.

Free to hide, free to run away. Free to loose yourself. Ourselves. A safe asile. Almost so wild & tremendous we get lost, intimidated.

Laying over

What about when it seems to be never enough space sometimes. Where do you stop? When is the race over?

Which boundaries do you draw for yourself if no one draws them for you? Can you live space free for ever?
Do we need a base ?
Do your base necessary has to be space identified?

Knowing when you’ve found your place. At least temporarily. The place that soothes your soul, awakens your astonishment, fills your heart with gratitude.

Familiarity where you least expect it. Comfort sometimes even.

Arriving by night to the coastline. Ocean view, moon reflection, horizon free, cradled by the sound of waves. Instant peace. In a blink of an eye, you know. You know you’re home.

Settling

And sometimes we stop. Because we have to or because we decide to. Because we’re stuck.

And then we delimit our frontiers. Make or create our own boundaries. Taking our marks.

Getting used to wildness. The diversity. Or even adversity. Making the new space ours. Or rather kind of ours. Subjectively.

Defining our limits. Our trajectory within what should soon be familiar.

We explore, we run in circles, we come back to our center, to what we soon call home. Meet the people, create the community.

Come to the circle. Find your gravity again in that new dimension. Find your balance against those new wild relentless elements.

Coming together

Looking for where to strive, where to find peace, where to gather, to come as one, to celebrate, to spark fire, to shine, to endure, to cry, to restore.

Because this is what space is for.

When space is shared. When space is made a home. When space is made a safe place to be your true and authentic self. When it makes your heart feel warm and home.

When you can hear the laughter and the radiant joy.

Give yourself or others space, distance, to take a step back, come back stronger, braver and wiser.

Realizing that.

Space is not what is given to you.
Space is not what you make of it.
Space is not what you build.
Space can’t be appropriated.

Space is what happens when you let it come and open to you. Shine even, in the most genuine way. When you open your heart to it’s beauty and find that’s where you belong.

When you let your guard down and are ready to share. Come as one.
Only can you then find that true sense of belonging.

We experience space. Yet needless to say space transforms us.
